Its blue color comes from trace iron and titanium. It has a special property found in almost no other mineral: it has two different hardness levels in the same stone, depending on which direction you scratch it. The French mineralogist Haüy named it disthène, meaning two strengths, for exactly this reason. Each bead alternates with ornate sterling silver beads and finishes with a sterling silver clasp.
