- The Stone: Santa Maria aquamarine in irregular faceted rondelle beads, each one transparent and deeply saturated in a blue that most aquamarine never reaches. Each bead is faceted to catch and scatter light through the stone, set between matte hematite discs that sharpen the contrast. Finished with a sterling silver clasp. Aquamarine scores 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the harder gemstones and well suited for daily wear.
- History: The name Santa Maria comes from the Santa Maria de Itabira mine in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, where aquamarine with this rare, deeply saturated blue was first discovered. The mine is now nearly exhausted. Today, "Santa Maria" is used as a color grade in the gem trade, describing aquamarine that meets an extremely narrow standard of hue, tone, and saturation. Only three shades out of approximately 1,500 on the Munsell Color System qualify. The stone must be blue without brown or yellow tints, medium-dark in tone, and highly saturated. Aquamarine itself has been prized for over 4,000 years. The Egyptians placed aquamarine beads in tombs. Greek sailors wore talismans engraved with Poseidon. Pliny the Elder documented it in his Naturalis Historia in 77 AD, two years before he died in the eruption of Vesuvius. In medieval Europe, it was believed to purify water and neutralize poison. It sits in both the Crown of St. Wenceslas in Bohemia and the Hungarian Crown of St. Stephen.
- The Belief: In modern crystal practice, aquamarine is a throat chakra stone, said to strengthen calm, clarity, and honest communication. It is also considered one of the strongest stones for emotional balance and courage under pressure. This is the rarest grade of that stone. Not because it comes from a different place, but because the earth made it deeper.
Our pieces are made with natural gemstones; slight variations in color, size, and pattern may occur.
