• The Stone: Millions of years of history. Larimar is a blue variety of pectolite. It formed in cavities inside volcanic rock during ancient eruptions that shaped the Caribbean. Its blue color comes from copper mixing into the stone as it formed. It is found in only one place on the planet: the Barahona province in the Dominican Republic. It is mined from a single mountainside by small teams using pickaxes and shovels. No two stones have the same pattern. Each bead shifts between white and blue like shallow water over sand.
• History: In 1916, a priest named Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes asked the Dominican government for permission to mine a blue stone he found in Barahona. His request was denied, and the stone was forgotten. It was found again in 1974 by Miguel Mendez and Norman Rilling. They found blue stones washed onto a beach by the Bahoruco River. They traced the stones upstream to the volcanic slopes above. Mendez named the stone by combining his daughter's name, Larissa, with mar, the Spanish word for sea. Locals knew about the stone long before, believing it came from the sea. Because it comes from a single source, larimar cannot be mass-produced. Every piece is limited by what the earth has left to give.
• The Belief: In modern crystal practice, larimar is a throat chakra stone. It is associated with calm, clear communication, and emotional balance. It is sometimes called the Atlantis Stone, based on old claims that a blue stone with healing powers would be found on a Caribbean island. This stone comes from one mine, on one mountain, in one country. When it is gone, it is gone.
